Surprisingly, even acts of violence such as this one, also in Philadelphia, the majority of the burning down of a police car met with the understanding of the Americans. (DUKAS / POLARIS)

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the democratic election challenger of US President Donald Trump, benefits from the criticism of Trump: He – here in a speech on racial unrest – is more likely to get a grip on the situation. (JIM WATSON / AFP)

On Monday, Donald Trump wanted to prove in Washington that he is in control. The campaign became a personal goal because he had teardrop gas used to drive peaceful demonstrators away for the walk to the church of St. John’s, which was damaged by rioters. (AP Photo / Patrick Semansky)

It doesn’t work. US President Donald Trumps (73) Self-portrayal as “President of Law and Order,” as he calls it, does not go down well with the American people. On the contrary, despite looting and some acts of violence against police officers, people are not only behind the mostly peaceful demonstrations – they can even understand the outbreaks of violence.
–
At least that is shown by several new surveys. According to a study commissioned by CBS, 49 percent of those surveyed disagree with Trump’s crisis management in George Floyd riots, with only 32 percent behind him. A survey by the Morning Consult Institute comes to practically the same result: 32 percent consider Trump’s reaction to the demonstrations to be good, 11 percent consider it at most sufficient – but 45 percent find it bad.
–
Americans stand behind protesters
It looks even worse for Trump in the new Reuters survey: 55 percent of those surveyed disagreed with his policies last week, only 33 percent are behind him. This is even less than the 39 percent who, according to Reuters, still support his entire administration.
–
The president may call the demonstrators “crooks”, the majority of the Americans are behind them. As many as 64 percent of respondents can understand that taking George Floyd’s death takes to the streets, Reuters said. Only 27 percent don’t like that. At Morning Consult, the number of demo sympathizers is 57 percent.
–
For comparison: Demonstrations against the corona lockdown in many states, the institute determined, only 28 percent of the respondents think that is a good thing. But these were protests that Donald Trump not only found sympathetic, but even actively promoted.
–
Joe Biden does much better
Particularly bitter for Trump: his democratic challenger, ex-Vice President Joe Biden (77), is given much greater competence to deal with the current problems: 47 to 30 percent consider him more suitable to tackle racial inequalities and 44 32 percent trust him to reform the police. Accordingly, Biden currently leads the Reuters election poll with 10 percent – more than ever since Biden became a de facto candidate for the Democrats.
–
The U.S. has changed dramatically since Trump’s election in 2016. The country has moved away from its line: According to a survey by the Monmouth Institute, 57 percent of Americans have complete understanding of the anger behind the black protests. 54 percent even find the actions of the demonstrators – for example, lighting a police post – either partially or completely justified. An amazing result.
–
Perhaps this is due to the fact that the majority of Americans after four years of Trump share minority frustration about the future: 74 to 21 percent believe the country is on the wrong track. America in the summer of 2020 is a deeply disappointed nation. (ley)
