Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lrs) – According to the police, around 1,500 people took part in a rally against the Russian attack on Ukraine in Frankfurt am Main. The call by the Ukrainian association Frankfurt for a peace rally was followed on Thursday evening by far more participants than the applicants had expected.

Many carried Ukrainian flags. Posters read: “Stop War in Ukraine” or “Embargo against Russia, no trade with the perpetrators”. Several hundred demonstrators then marched in front of the Russian Consulate General.

In Darmstadt, around 200 people came together on Luisenplatz to protest against the war. Mayor Jochen Partsch (Greens) wrote to the mayor of Darmstadt’s sister city Uschhorod: “We stand with Ukraine.” Together with the citizens of Darmstadt, he reaffirmed “our friendship with the citizens of Uzhhorod, who today face war atrocities that we believed have long been relegated to the dustbin of history”. Uzhhorod is located in the border triangle between Ukraine, Hungary and Slovakia and has around 117,000 inhabitants.
