Demonstrations and Protests Escalate in Staten Island Against Opening of Immigrant Shelters

Demonstrations against the opening of shelters in the Staten Island area escalated this Tuesday night when a group of neighbors blocked a bus with immigrants who were being taken to a new shelter.

The events occurred around 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of Midland Avenue and Father Capodanno Boulevard in the Midland Beach area.

There, a group of protesters tried to block an MTA bus that was trying to drop off a group of recently arrived immigrants at the building that was a shelter for the elderly in Island Shores Beach recently converted into a shelter with the capacity to house 288 people.

Among the people protesting were members of the Guardian Angels association, headed by Curtis Silwa, who have been present in almost all the protests held on Staten Island against immigrants.

Police reported that 10 people were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, while another person was charged with assaulting an officer while attempting to arrest him.

This protest joins others that have been held in this area against the opening of shelters for asylum seekers.
