Social and political movements called for Sunday demonstrations in at least 50 cities in 23 countries that have as their main target the Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, aiming to contest the response to the Covid-19 pandemic and “fascism” in Brazil.
Organized by Brazilians living abroad, as well as by several popular movements and political entities, the so-called “Stop Bolsonaro World Act” will feature face-to-face and virtual demonstrations in European cities such as Munich, Berlin and Frankfurt (Germany), Barcelona and Madrid (Spain) ), Paris (France), Rome (Italy), Zurich and Geneva (Switzerland) or Dublin (Ireland).
In Portugal, the act “in solidarity with the Brazilian people in the face of the crimes of Bolsonaro and his government” is scheduled for Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, according to the event’s page on the social network Facebook.
The “fight against fascism, neoliberalism, racism, machismo, LGBTphobia, indigenous genocide and the destruction of the environment”, are some of the causes that move this international act.

Among the movements that organized the demonstration are the Coletivo Estrela da Democracia, the International Front of Brazilians Against the Coup (Fibra), and the Women United Against Bolsonaro group.
“Since winning the elections, deforestation has exploded, the murder of indigenous people, blacks, women, gays and popular leaders, the systematic attack on culture, education, the increase in precarious work, the stagnation of the economy. (… ) At the same time, the truculence of the President’s supporters increased, which has at its side violent and greedy militias, military and police, longing for the dictatorship and the most ignorant, inhuman and petty people in that country “, said the organization.
Organizers also cite the high number of Covid-19 cases in the country, the underreporting of the disease, the precarious situation of some hospitals, the lack of support for health professionals, as well as the lack of a mandatory confinement decree to contain the spread of the virus in Brazil.
“The recipe for Bolsonarist ideology has aggravated the Brazilian political crisis. If they are not contained in time, the country will live in chaos and misery for decades and will make our lives a nightmare. Now enough! (…) We are on the right side history and we will not rest until we overthrow the current government, and get all our social, human, environmental, labor and economic rights back “, added the organizing movements of the act.
The Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT), the main Brazilian union organization, also joined the protests and called for a worldwide mobilization against Jair Bolsonaro and his executive.
“This Sunday, the whole world will demonstrate against fascism in Brazil and against the psychopathic President Jair Bolsonaro. It is the #StopBolsonaro world day. (…) I count on the demonstration of all so that we can overthrow this fascist government of Brazil and guarantee the democracy of our country “, said CUT’s International Relations secretary, Antonio Lisboa, in a video shared on social networks.
