Anyone currently walking along the Burgring should see the photo exhibition”Why aren’t you smiling?“, which deals with domestic violence.
Instead, you once again find broken images that have been kicked out of their frames and their texts that have been rendered unreadable.
The works are always done badly by artists Robert Fleischanderhelpers and passengers were put together with adhesive tape. According to Fleischanderl, the adhesive method is the best solution because everything cannot be replaced in such a short time.
The project was only approved by the Minister of Justice on November 8 Alma Zadic (green) and Doris Schmidauer open. The night before, unknown persons vandalized four of the exhibits on display.
On the night of November 15 there were four more, and the next night there were ten more – including some shows that had already been taped together. On the night of November 17, unknown persons struck eight more times.

“Things have gone well since then. We are gluing together everything that is possible. In some cases it is a real puzzle game,” says Fleischanderl in an interview with KURIER. He is currently on site to check if any other displays have been damaged.

The photo exhibition next to the Burgring can be seen for another three weeks.
“The answer is simple because it feels emotional,” says the artist. Like some private relationships, violence is the solution to deal with feelings. “Exposing misbehavior can also evoke strong emotions,” Fleischanderl continued. Another explanation is clearly conscious disdain.”
He and his team put more than two and a half years of work into preparing the show. The aim was to bring the issue of domestic violence against women to the center of society.
In the middle of society
So the exhibition site in the center of the city was chosen on purpose. The area around Heldenplatz is primarily a place for social and political expression.
Putting the show elsewhere is out of the question for a number of reasons. On the one hand, space permits are required, and on the other hand, they want as many passers-by as possible to see the show: “After all, there is a show to see. “
There is more doubt about a planned traveling exhibition through the federal states of Austria next year due to the lack of budget for the renewed production of the exhibitions.
It is everyone’s business
Even so, Fleischanderl is surprised by the strong response. “It makes me sad and angry. The issue of domestic violence affects everyone – across all levels of society.” This makes it all the more important to shed enough light on the subject.
16 days against violence against women
The topic of domestic violence was also discussed in the current session of the Vienna City Council on Wednesday as part of the “16 days against violence against women”. “Violence against women is a huge social problem. Violence affects one in three women in Austria from the age of 15 onwards – a fact we cannot accept. In Vienna we work shoulder to shoulder to fight this violence and ensure a safe life for all women,” we say Marina Hanke (SPÖ).
“Violence against women is a symptom of a system that continues to disadvantage women – be it through lower pay, poverty in old age or dependency,” Hanke continued. This makes it all the more important as a city to take targeted measures – including prevention and support. These currently include, among other things, five women’s shelters, a 24-hour women’s crisis line and specialized violence prevention groups.
Working with young people is also particularly important: “Programs like ‘Respect. Stronger together.’ breaking down gender roles and promoting equality in school.”
In Vienna they would “work hard to combat violence against women,” the statement continued.
The 16 days against violence against women cover the period between 25 November – the international day of remembrance for all women and girls who are victims of violence – and 10 December – international human rights day.
