About a hundred demonstrators rallied on Wednesday against the relocation of DSM’s head office from Heerlen to Maastricht.

Last Friday, DSM announced that at the end of 2023 the location of its head office will move from Heerlen to Maastricht. This means that the chemical company is leaving the city where it was founded after more than 120 years. The mayor of Heerlen, Roel Wever, and Ron Meyer, party chairman of the SP in Heerlen, were present at the demonstration.

It is no coincidence that the demonstration was organized on Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm, a scheduled council meeting about the relocation of DSM will start in Heerlen.
Boos
Both the PvdA and the SP are angry about the move. “Mrs Edith Schippers, director of DSM, can tell us right here in the face why Heerlen didn’t even get a chance to keep the company that was built up here with blood, sweat and tears. Wants to leave Mijnstreek and also want to receive millions of public money for it,” Meyer wrote in advance on the Facebook event page.
PvdA party chairman Henk Verreck was also unpleasantly surprised: “What are all the nice words about cooperation worth if people work in this way.”

According to the management, the building should be smaller and more sustainable. In addition, the company wants an office that is easier to reach by public transport.
