Demonstration against corona policy in Utrecht, two arrests

Protesters protested against the corona policy in Utrecht this afternoon. Demonstrators gathered on Jaarbeursplein and walked a route through the city center. They were accompanied by the police, who had temporarily closed off a large part of the center for cyclists. The demonstration was over by 3.30pm.

According to the ANP, about five hundred demonstrators attended, and the police also report that there were about five hundred demonstrators. The participants marched through the center with upturned Dutch flags, yellow umbrellas and protest signs, reports RTV Utrecht.

The procession stopped on the way at restaurant Waku Waku. Mayor Sharon Dijksma ordered the restaurant to close because the owners refused to ask visitors for their corona pass.

“The organization has passed on the route to us,” says a spokesperson for the municipality of Utrecht. “We had counted on them to stop at the restaurant. The demonstrators have also placed candles and flowers there.”

After a short break, the demonstrators continued to return to Jaarbeursplein. Police say the protest has been largely peaceful. However, two protesters have been arrested for insulting. Among other things, agents were called NSB members.
