Demonstrate against corona measures? ‘Not now,’ says Sonja Barend

The former talk show host and journalist joined last night On 1 to talk about her new book, The Apple in Paradise. In that book Barend writes how she looks at the current corona time.

‘Choosing for young people’

When it comes down to it and intensive care (IC) is full, then the youth should be given priority, says Barend. “My husband is a little older than me,” she says at the table. “We have had an incredibly beautiful life, so if the doctors had to choose, I understand they are choosing younger people.”

The 80-year-old Barend finds it difficult that there is little solidarity between younger and older generations. Jort Kelder, who previously said the economy will be shutting down to save over 80s who are overweight and have smoked, says Barend intolerant.

‘Hupsakee, old people on the side’

“I think that is so terrible that such a young person who is just as well off as I am, puts old people aside,” says Barend. “We can only overcome this if we do it together.”

“I have a really hard time with those people who are demonstrating,” she continues. Like Virus Truth, or groups of people demonstrating against a vaccine. “Demonstrate? Not now”, says Barend.

Pim Fortuyn

For years Barend made television programs in which she exposed social issues. In the conversation in Op1, a fragment with Pim Fortuyn also comes along. In this, the politician changes his opinion about gas extraction in Groningen during an interview with Barend.

Barend now calls it ‘unique’. “Why does a politician never say, I saw this wrong, I will come back to that”, the former talk show host wonders:
