The house at Gartengasse 11 is about to be demolished. Neighbors are worried. The Datler family at number 9 is the most affected. “We are worried that our house will be damaged because of a shared wall,” says Hertha Datler, who is also annoyed that she was forbidden from installing roof windows at the time “Don’t worry about the appearance of the ‘hole’ in the street front.” Monument protection and UNESCO cultural heritage suddenly don’t matter. In addition, the access to the planned garage (behind the Hafnerplatz 12 high-rise) will draw traffic into the narrow inner-city alley.
Demolition is not a reason for ensemble protection procedures
A request to city councilor for construction Günter Herz was answered by deputy city director. Hannes Zimmermann: “The house in question is not under monument protection.” According to the Federal Monuments Office, there are also no requirements for an ensemble protection procedure. “In the event of demolition, the question of the stability of the immediate neighboring buildings must be examined by a statics expert as part of a separate procedure.”
Like City Councilor Herz, Zimmermann also emphasizes that there are currently no construction proceedings pending with the city. The house could soon be approaching its final hour. However, what will take its place there in the future remains uncertain for the time being.
