Demographics and healthcare as main highlights at this year’s Women in Science and Business event – 2024-03-14 07:49:34

A meeting of women from science and business was held in the month of the woman. This happened in the Grand Hotel and SPA “Primorets”, with the special participation of Academician Nikola Sabotinov – Chairman of the BAS, 2008-2012 and Art. cor. Prof. Alexander Kostov – National Academic Network Coordinator of BAS.

The event is organized for the ninth time in a row by Prof. Sevdalina Turmanova, who is the coordinator of the Regional Academic Center – Burgas of the BAS and Eng. Vidka Valcheva, deputy. Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Burgas. This is happening in fulfillment of a cooperation agreement between TIC – Burgas and RAC – Burgas.

“We are continuing together a tradition that we briefly interrupted during the pandemic. It was related to organizing this type of meeting in March between women who are representatives of scientific and educational institutions, women from business, and women who have proven their role in public life in our city. The focus of our meetings has always been related to different topics and lecturers who are from the BAS. Until now, the lecturers have been men, but today for the first time I have invited two successful ladies – Prof. Antoineta Hristova and Prof. Mariana Dimova. The two main topics are demography and health care,” said Prof. Turmanova when welcoming the guests to the hall.

“It is an honor and a privilege for me to participate in the opening of this important and significant forum. A large part of the ladies present are the basis of the success and development of the city of Burgas. I appreciate your professionalism and qualities and thank you for living, working and creating in our city, because such engines as you are needed for every city that has ambitions to develop and have potential. The topics and discussions in today’s forum coincide with the problems we are working on and I will gladly await the solutions and opinions you will give”, were the words of the mayor Dimitar Nikolov at the opening of the event.

Within the framework of the meeting, two topics of high importance were touched upon. Prof. Dr. Antoineta Hristova, political psychologist at the Institute for the Study of Population and Man, at the BAS, spoke about demographic problems and demographic solutions.

“It’s very important to emphasize something going into demographics – it’s not one discipline. It includes knowledge from the world of sociology, statistics, psychology, history and others. It should be specified that it is not studied anywhere. In this sense, we are trying to develop staff from different fields,” said Prof. Hristova.

“I want to congratulate Burgas for the demographic policies it is undertaking. I will be happy if we do a master’s program in “Demography” with you, where the competence is at the level”, she added.

The negative statistics indicate that the trends for an aging population are increasing, and that by 2035 it will progressively increase. In addition, the birth rate around 2030 outlines predictions that the capital will have a birth rate followed by Varna, and in Burgas the curve is decreasing, which indicates that this should be worked on, through different approaches and incentives for young families.

Prof. Dr. Mariana Dimova from the Faculty of Dental Medicine of MU-Sofia and the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry gave a presentation on the topic “Dental health after COVID-19 through the eyes of medicine”.

She noted the degree of importance for timely visits to dental specialists and in this regard, explained the problems that have been created after social isolation during the pandemic.

The participants and guests of the event received roses, as a kind gesture of attention, from the company “Burgastvet-90-Tanev” EOOD.
