Miami (USA), Jan 12 (EFE).- The Democratic Party retained the seat in the House of Representatives representing a Florida district that was left vacant after the death of Congressman Alcee Hastings, with the victory this Tuesday of Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, daughter of Haitians who emigrated to the United States.

In a special election Tuesday in the 20th district, which encompasses parts of Broward County and neighboring Palm Beach, Cherfilus-McCormick defeated Republican candidate Jason Mariner.

According to provisional official data, with more than 99% of the electoral precincts counted, Cherfilus-McCormick had 78% of the votes and Mariner 20%.

The rest was divided between three other candidates: Mike Maat, of the Libertarian Party, and independents Jim Flynn and Leonard Serratore.

The 20th district is a Democratic stronghold in a state governed by Republicans and since 2012 its incumbent was Alcee Hastings, who died of pancreatic cancer in April 2021.

Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick’s victory will strengthen the slim majority of Democrats in the lower house of Congress.

According to Patrick Maloney, chairman of the Democratic committee in charge of congressional campaigns, the arrival of Cherfilus-McCormick in the lower house will help “continue to advance the important task of the Democrats to ensure a better economy for all and every single American.”

Cherfilus-McCormick, who runs the health sector company Trinity Health Care Services, had won the primary election held in November to be the Democratic candidate by just five votes. EFE
