The fate of a “nation of immigrants” and border control policies are being questioned by the Democratic Party
(British Economist magazine January 27, 2024 issue)
Immigration policy proposals are essential for a Democratic administration
To stop Trump from coming back, Democrats need to come up with immigration policy proposals.
Donald Trump’s mother is from the small village of Tongue (population 500) in northern Scotland, which was once a Viking territory.
My grandfather was from the village of Kallstadt (population 1,200) in Bavaria, Germany, where the Heinz family, known for ketchup, was born.
Joe Biden’s ancestors came to the United States from Ireland and England.
Everyone in this country is from a different place. Even Native Americans came from outside, although they had lived there much longer.
The appeal of the United States is enormous, and there are 160 million adults around the world who would move there if given the chance.
This number is tens of millions more than most Americans would consider acceptable.
The biggest hurdle to Biden’s re-election
This mismatch is at the heart of the problem that threatens to hinder President Biden’s re-election.
In 2016, Trump took advantage of the “border turmoil” to win the Republican presidential nomination and ultimately the presidency.
At the time, he preached as if record numbers of illegal immigrants were crossing the border. It wasn’t a valid point at the time, but it’s true now.
Nearly 250,000 people attempted to cross the U.S. southern border in November alone. Most new arrivals apply for asylum. He will then be released on bail in the United States and will have to wait several years for the outcome of his application to be released.
More than 3.1 million people have been allowed to cross the border since Biden took office. That’s more than the population of Chicago.
At least 1.7 million other people overstay their country, either by entering the country without being detected by authorities or by overstaying their visas.
Republican governors have funneled these immigrants into states run by Democratic governors, pushing problems on the southern border north.
This is partly why Republicans are more trusted than Democrats when it comes to border security, a 30-point difference.
And this is the issue where Republicans have the biggest lead over Democrats.
