Democratic Peace Corps Awards Scholarships to North Korean Defectors and Multicultural Students

On June 30, 2023, the Democratic Peace Unification Advisory Council (Democratic Peace and Unification Advisory Committee) Medical Volunteer Corps (Director Kim Chul-soo) held the ‘Democratic Peace Medical Corps Scholarship Award Ceremony’ for North Korean defectors and model students from multicultural families at the office.

In particular, at the event, Kim Gwan-yong, senior vice chairman of the National Unification Advisory Council, and Seok Dong-hyun, secretary general, attended and awarded scholarships to 40 students.

The Democratic Peace Corps Medical Volunteer Group held a scholarship award ceremony on June 30th.

This scholarship support project was prepared with the purpose of supporting the successful settlement of North Korean defectors and multicultural families, and contributing to the creation of a foundation for peaceful unification and national unity.

A total of 40 million won was given to 20 college students, 2 million won each, and a total of 10 million won was awarded to 20 elementary, middle and high school students, 500,000 won each, and a total of 50 million won was awarded in scholarships.

Since 2016, the Democratic Peace Corps has selected and supported future-oriented students with excellent academic performance and a clear view of the country as scholarship students. In addition, since 2014, health examinations and sharing medical care for North Korean defectors and multicultural families have been conducted 23 times, providing 500 million won for medicines and treatment expenses, and a high-quality first-aid kit support project.

The Democratic Peace Corps Medical Volunteer Corps awarded a total of 555.1 million won in scholarships, including a total of 207 college students and 257 elementary, middle, and high school students, from the 1st to the 13th (20th 4th round) in 2016.

Director Cheol-soo Kim said, “The Democratic Peace Corps Medical Volunteer Corps will actively develop support projects for North Korean defectors and students from multicultural families.”

Senior Vice Chairman Kim Kwan-yong said at the event, “Support for the Democratic Peace Corps must be strengthened to play a major role in preparing for a powerful future toward peaceful unification by providing educational support for North Korean defectors and students from multicultural families.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Peace Tong Medical Volunteer Corps plans to support North Korean refugees and multicultural families through various activities at home and abroad, and actively nurture their children into talented people who will contribute to their future growth and national integration.
