On the 5th, the Democratic Party of Korea decided to cancel the strategic nomination of Kwon Hyang-yeop, former Blue House Secretary for Balanced Personnel, and hold primary elections in the Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, and Gurye-eul regions of Jeollanam-do, where the ‘private election’ controversy arose. Former Secretary Kwon is competing against incumbent lawmaker Seo Dong-yong in this district.

The Democratic Party decided on the strategic nomination of former Secretary Kwon at a closed-door top-level meeting late at night on the 1st. It is reported that there were some opposing opinions at the meeting at the time, but it was passed as is. However, as it was reported that former Secretary Kwon served as deputy chief of staff in charge of Representative Lee Jae-myung’s wife Kim Hye-kyung at the election camp during the last presidential election, suspicions were raised that “Isn’t it Sacheon?” It is said that there may be another reason for the unusual strategic nomination to Honam, the Democratic Party’s stronghold, and not the metropolitan area.

The Democratic Party held an emergency top meeting this afternoon to discuss the strategic nomination of former Secretary Kwon and then decided to change it to a primary election. Spokesperson Han Min-soo said, “A strong opinion was raised that changing the strategic constituency in a situation where false information is being spread by fake news is against the judgment and principles of the Mission and Strategic Mission Committee,” adding, “However, Candidate Kwon himself expressed his affection for the party. He stated that he would confidently participate in the primary, and this was accepted at the highest level.” The suspicion that it was Sacheon is fake news, but since former Secretary Kwon stated that he would hold a primary, it was accepted and changed to a primary. The Democratic Party said it would report Han Dong-hoon, chairman of the People Power Party’s emergency response committee, and some media outlets for spreading false information and disparaging the Democratic Party’s nomination.

At a press conference held in the Yeongdeungpo-gap area of Seoul this afternoon, CEO Lee Jae-myeong said, “It is shocking that such fake news is being reported about Sacheon.” Representative Lee said, “Candidate Kwon is a party official who has worked for the Democratic Party for nearly 30 years and a secretary who worked in the Presidential Office of the Moon Jae-in administration.” He added, “How can you report it with ‘secretary’ in quotation marks and attack her as Sacheon when you have no personal relationship with Lee Jae-myung’s wife? “My wife has no personal relationship with that person.” Representative Lee said, “Candidate Kwon was a former Democratic Party official and was just one of several deputy chiefs of the presidential candidate’s spouse’s office.” He also said, “How can he be reduced to a secretary, and how can he be defined as having committed a crime based on that?”

Former Secretary Kwon applied for nomination in the same region four years ago, but lost in the primary to Rep. Seo Dong-yong. As the Democratic Party decided to hold the primary today, the two faced a rematch in the primary.
