The Democratic Party announced in a written briefing last night that it would cancel the nomination of former lawmaker Jeong Bong-ju, who is from the Gangbuk district in Seoul.
The Democratic Party said, “Candidate Chung has caused concern to the public due to the controversy over his false apology to the soldiers who were victims of wooden mines,” and ″We have decided to proceed with the process of re-recommending the Democratic Party candidate in accordance with the party constitution.”
Former lawmaker Jeong Bong-ju initially said that he “apologized directly to the person concerned by phone” for his “crutch giveaway” comment in 2017, but a soldier injured by a North Korean landmine told MBC reporters that he “never received an apology phone call.” .
One day later, former lawmaker Jeong changed his statement, saying, “I couldn’t apologize in person because I couldn’t find contact information.”
In response to the inappropriate remarks spreading into a lie controversy, Representative Lee Jae-myung said, “We are aware of the seriousness,” and emphasized “the public’s level of perspective,” effectively implying that a decision to cancel former lawmaker Jeong’s nomination was imminent.
