Democratic Party Blocks Republican Bill for Emergency Assistance to Israel without Aid to Ukraine

Representatives of the Democratic Party blocked in the US Senate the Republican bill on emergency assistance to Israel, which does not also provide assistance to Ukraine. Reuters reports this.

During the November 7 meeting, Republican Senator Roger Marshall said that the Senate should not delay the release of “critical aid to Israel for a single day.” Democrats responded by saying that it was necessary to provide assistance to both Israel and Ukraine. “Our allies in Ukraine can afford a delay no more than our allies in Israel,” said Sen. Patty Murray, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee.

US President Joe Biden on October 20 asked Congress to approve funding for aid to Israel and Ukraine, as well as to allocate funds to counter China and to build a protective wall on the border with Mexico. Biden’s request calls for $106 billion in funding, of which $61.4 billion will go to help Ukraine and $14.3 billion to help Israel.

In early November, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill to provide $14.3 billion to Israel in response to the Hamas attack on the country on October 7. Aid to Ukraine was not included in this bill. At the same time, the bill provides for a reduction in funding for the Tax Service by the same 14.3 billion.

Next, the bill was to be considered by the Senate, where Democrats hold the majority of seats. Representatives of the Democratic Party immediately stated that the document had no chance of being adopted. Joe Biden, in turn, previously stated that if Congress nevertheless passes a law on the allocation of military assistance to Israel without mentioning support for Ukraine, the US President will use his veto.

The US Congress has not yet adopted an annual budget, which includes a new package of military assistance to Ukraine. The Joe Biden administration and representatives of both houses of Congress emphasized that the United States will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine.
