On the second day of the Democratic Party convention in Chicago, Barack and Michelle Obama took the floor and did not spare words of criticism of Donald Trump.
The Democratic National Convention has been underway since Monday (August 19) and will end on Thursday. Kamala Harris will be selected as the party’s presidential candidate.
During the first day of the convention, the current president of the United States took the floor, among others. Joe Biden. Yesterday, the former president performed in Chicago Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.
Michelle Obama: Trump is afraid of us
The first to speak was the former first lady, who did not hide her criticism of the Republican candidate in her speech. Donald Trump.
“For years, Donald Trump has done everything in his power to convince people that they should be afraid of us. His narrow-minded views of the world make him feel threatened by two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who happen to be black,” Obama said.
She also addressed Trump’s campaign statement that migrants coming to the U.S. were taking away jobs for black people. “Who’s to say that the job he’s applying for right now could be one of those >?” she said from the stage, to much enthusiasm from the crowd at the United Center Arena.
Barack Obama: America is ready for a new chapter
Next, Barack Obama, who was the president of the United States from 2009 to 2017, appeared on stage. His entrance was accompanied by chants of “Yes, she can,” a reference to his campaign slogan when he ran for president, which was “Yes, we can.”
He also took a dig at Trump during his speech. “He’s a 78-year-old billionaire who’s been complaining about his problems since he stepped off his gold elevator nine years ago. It’s a constant stream of barbs and complaints, and it’s only gotten worse now that he’s starting to fear defeat by Kamala,” the former president said.
“These kid nicknames and crazy conspiracy theories. This weird obsession with crowd size. It never ends. I once heard someone compare Trump to a neighbor who’s been making noise outside your window all day. In the case of a neighbor, it’s annoying. In the case of a president, it’s dangerous,” he said.
“But what’s most important is that Donald Trump wants you to think that this country is hopelessly divided between us and them. Between the ‘real’ Americans who support him, of course, and those outsiders who don’t. He wants you to think that you’ll be richer and safer if you give him the power to put the ‘other’ people back in their place. It’s one of the oldest political tricks, and it’s being used by a man whose actions are a bit outdated,” he added.
Obama portrayed Kamala Harris as the antithesis of Trump. “She’s worked hard for it, and she cares about what other people are going through. She’s not the noisy neighbor. She’s the neighbor who’ll come to your aid if you need it,” he said.
“We have a chance to elect someone who has spent her entire life trying to give people the same opportunities that America gave her. Someone who sees you and hears you, who will get up every morning and fight for you. The next president of the United States: Kamala Harris,” he said.
According to Obama, the US does not need “another four years of insolence, shirking and chaos”. In this way, he referred to Trump’s previous term. “We’ve seen this before, and sequels are usually worse than the first. America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a better story. We are ready for President Kamala Harris,” he said.
