The Ombudsman, Carlos Camargo, issued a warning call to the National Government in view of the regional elections that will take place exactly in a month and a half. Camargo took advantage of the situation, that is, the celebration of World Democracy Day, to raise what is at stake in the next elections and the electoral risks in half of the Colombian municipalities.
“Today is an opportunity to exalt the democratic tradition in our country. Democracy is fundamental in the search for peace and justice, and has been a solid pillar in Colombia’s history. However, currently, we face the reality that this democratic tradition is at risk, which is why from the Ombudsman’s Office we issue Early Alert 030 of 2023 with which we warn the national Government about the risk in the electoral context,” expressed the Ombudsman.
According to him, throughout the national territory there are 113 municipalities at extreme risk and 286 at high risk in the face of the elections, due to the armed structures that operate in the territories and that, according to the Ombudsman’s Office, have strengthened in recent times.
Two political parties and a coalition were unable to register candidates in some departments due to threats. “As an ombudsman I say it categorically: democracy is in danger. In addition to the risks warned, free democratic competition was lost from the moment the different parties were not allowed to register candidates.”explained Carlos Camargo.
