/ world today news/ The political pressure and arbitrariness of local elections endangers democracy in Bulgaria, warned the Forum of the Extra-Parliamentary Democratic Community.
The forum consists of representatives of the United People’s Party, Voice of the People, Movement “Democratic Action” – DZ, NDSV, DEOS and the civil quota of the “Right” Coalition. The forum is an initiative ready to actively oppose attempts to degrade democracy in our country, it is not an ideological platform and is open to the joining of other democratic formations.
The Forum spread its position to representatives of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the embassies of the EU countries and the USA.
At the meeting, evidence was presented – forged, corrected and “wrong” minutes, video recordings of the conduct of the election day and counting of ballots, and other testimonies from advocates of extra-parliamentary parties, which clearly demonstrate pressure, incompetence, and in places, deliberate abuse of the vote of the electorate in favor of the largest political force in the country.
The entire state-party apparatus was turned into an election machine, European funds into a motive for pressure, and individual candidates were threatened with tax audits and inspections by all possible institutions. This led in some places to refusal to participate in elections and even to unprecedented refusals to participate in run-offs, including before the final election.
Nearly 60% of Bulgarian citizens ignored this imitation of elections, and another 20% opposed such a dictate from the authorities. Nevertheless, the country demonstrates the cynical thesis of stability of the government and illiteracy of the population, which justifies the huge number of invalid ballots.
The participants in the meeting were informed that the country is practically deprived of a basic value and instrument of democracy – the right to hold free and democratic elections. In practice, the GERB political party is trying to bring back the forgotten communist times, when the primary party organizations functioned by place of work. Citizens face deepening Euroscepticism, demotivation to participate in political processes and emigration. Readiness was expressed to inform the media in Western Europe and the United States, as well as the relevant European institutions, about the violation of fundamental rights of civil society in our country.
