Demir? Rapid coach Feldhofer: “It’s steadily going uphill” – football

The SK Rapid Vienna has made a successful start in the master group!

Away from Austria Klagenfurt, Hütteldorfer recorded a 3-1 win (match report >>>), which means that the Green-Whites can celebrate three Bundesliga victories in a row for the first time this season.

After the 2-0 away at WSG Tirol, the Viennese followed up with a 3-0 win against Austria from Klagenfurt, which was immensely important in terms of the fight for the championship group, at the end of the regular season last weekend would have.

There were just seven days between the two duels with the promoted team from Carinthia, who, however, didn’t have much of a say in the second meeting either.

“We wanted that, we hoped that we’d start the top playoff with three points. I don’t think it would be that easy for the other opponents to win here either. So we’re overjoyed now,” said Ferdinand Feldhofer happily “Sky”.

“We’ve now beaten Klagenfurt twice and scored six goals in the process, and the team deserves a lot of praise for that,” added the Rapid head coach.

“We knew where the Klagenfurt’s weaknesses were”

“We wanted to do it like last week in the home game. We knew where the Klagenfurt team had their weaknesses,” explains Kevin Wimmer on “Sky” the tactic with which Rapid went into the game. “We wanted to get in deep at the back in the last chain.”

A recipe for success that also bore fruit last Sunday. A week ago it was Bernhard Zimmermann who scored Rapid after a perfectly timed pass from Filip Stojkovic to make it 1-0, this time it was Marco Grüll after assists from Dejan Petrovic.

Zimmermann was allowed to celebrate again before the break whistle. The 20-year-old scored for the third time in his first third Bundesliga game, allowing him to score all of his Bundesliga goals against Austria Klagenfurt.

“Of course it’s an indescribable feeling. Actually, I can’t get enough of it. I can still improve everywhere. I just have to work hard on myself so that I can go one step further,” Zimmermann still hasn’t had enough.

Rapid scores “in the right phases”

Klagenfurt made the game exciting again after Zimmermann’s goal, equalizing with a converted penalty from Turgay Gemicibasi. For which the Klagenfurt team could also thank Rapid, among others, as Kevin Wimmer and Filip Stojkovic stood in their own way, whereupon the former produced a handball.

“It all happened so quickly. The sun wasn’t optimal. We both tried to go to the ball. Unfortunately, that happens. But we didn’t let ourselves be dissuaded from our line,” Kevin Wimmer explains the scene.

Yusuf Demir showed this at the beginning of the second half, increasing his comeback goal to 3:1 (More >>>). The game was over at the latest after Gemicibasi was excluded from the game just a few moments later, which Feldhofer described as “tough”.

“After the change of sides we knew they would try everything for the first few minutes. The 3-1 came at the right time, of course,” Wimmer said. “We scored the goals at exactly the right moment today and that was crucial. We always nipped any hope they had in the bud. That’s why I think there was no doubt today who would win.”

Feldhofer: “…then the development fits”

Nevertheless, in the last half hour in the majority, there were still a few opportunities left. “The quick 3-1 after the break played into our hands. But then we failed to improve our goal difference a bit,” Feldhofer knows.

In general, you can see a lot of room for improvement at Rapid. “I think we certainly didn’t play our best game, but we played it dry at home, even though we let them come back unnecessarily. But otherwise we didn’t allow much today,” said Wimmer.

There is also room for improvement with the players, considering how young Rapid are at the moment. If youngsters like Bernhard Zimmermann, Martin Moormann or Yusuf Demir continue to deliver like they did in Klagenfurt, you can expect a lot.

“It’s looking pretty good at the moment. If we can also manage the consistency to call up the top level regularly, then the development will be right,” says Feldhofer. Demir’s development in particular makes him feel positive: “I think things are going steadily uphill. That’s how we planned it. Maybe that was the opening for more.”

Full focus on the Vienna Derby

However, Feldhofer is clear that one cannot rest on one’s laurels, especially with regard to the coming weekend, with the Vienna derby – the first in the history of the Bundesliga championship group – a very big highlight is on the program.

“We will analyze the game, check it off quickly and then put our full focus on Austria. It’s high time, especially at home, that we score three points and give the fans a derby win,” Wimmer is already looking forward to the derby.

A game in which the current green and white run is to be continued.
