Demir cuts subsidies for solar panel parks

The Flemish government has prepared the decree to end the over-subsidization of large solar parks. The Council of State must now help to ensure that the arrangement remains in place before the Constitutional Court. With the approach, Energy Minister Zuhal Demir wants to remove 1.2 billion euros in costs for green energy certificates from the energy bill, between next year and 2032.

The government wants to stop the payout for about 1,200 installations from about two hundred investors. This concerns installations from before 2013, whose green certificates are not yet linked to the energy price. That was already decided in February and has now been cast in a decree.

According to the Flemish government, the investors in those solar parks have already earned back their investment for a long time.

“We will consult with the advisory councils and then obtain legal advice from the Council of State,” said Minister Zuhal Demir (N-VA). “We know that this decree may be subject to legal challenge, although I hope not, so it is important that it stands.”

Fernand Huts is an example of an investor who is affected by the decision. And he is indeed going to court to challenge this decree.

The small installations of families are not covered by the decree, the minister promises. They should feel the measure in a declining bill.
