Demi Vollering said goodbye to Annemiek van Vleuten on social media. The SD Worx rider calls Van Vleuten her ‘biggest rival of the past two years.’ “What a career you have had. You have won so much and inspired so many people,” she writes, among other things.
Vollering and Van Vleuten have fought many bitter duels in recent years. This year in the Vuelta a España and the Tour de France, last year in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and again the Vuelta and the Tour. While Van Vleuten often came out on top last year, the roles were reversed in 2023.
“Thank you for all the great duels and also the not so great duels,” said Vollering. “Hopefully you had a lovely day in your training area with your loved ones and all the best in the next chapter of your life. I’ll see you soon.”
Vollering himself was not present at Van Vleuten’s farewell in Arnhem. The rider had initially started in the Simac Ladies Tour, but retired sick on Saturday.
