Demi Lovato: Challenging Gender Norms and the Need for Gender-Neutral Spaces

The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer identifies as a “fluid person.” Why does she want to be addressed as ‘she’ and ‘her’ again? Well, it all depends on how other people handled her pronouns, she says. “I had to constantly explain to people why I identified with those pronouns,” said Demi. “It was all very tiring.”

In her own words, Demi just got tired of it. “But precisely because it took so much effort, I also know how important it is to keep talking about those pronouns.”

The singer also expresses the wish that there will be more gender-neutral spaces for both artists and other people. “Every day I am confronted with the fact that they are not there. Think of toilets, for example. I have access to the ladies’ room, even though I do not fully identify as a woman.”

Demi doesn’t think it makes sense that there are often only two options; man or woman. “That doesn’t make sense. I see myself forced to choose a woman, because there are not several options.” But the singer does not feel 100 percent woman at all. “I think this needs to change. Hopefully over time there will be more options.”
