Dealing with dementia

Attention to dementia is necessary. The number of people who will develop the disease will increase rapidly in the coming years: from 290,000 people with dementia now, to more than half a million in 2040. There are currently 5 new people with dementia in the Netherlands every hour. It is important that those around them know what dementia is and how to properly deal with people with dementia. So that people with dementia can continue to participate and do not find themselves excluded from society.

During the year, the volunteers of Alzheimer Nederland South Holland North organize activities for people with dementia and their informal caregivers, such as Alzheimer Cafés and information meetings. On the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day, they want to inform the general public by taking the initiative for a Dementia Book Week. In the period from September 15 to 29, libraries and bookstores in various municipalities will have reading tables with books and information material about dementia. Participants can be recognized by a poster on the (shop) window and a poster at the reading table. In a number of places, the Dementia Book Week is accompanied by other activities, such as a lecture.

Everyone is cordially invited to visit a reading table and/or participate in the activities. All information about the Dementia Book Week can be found on the website of Alzheimer Nederland, South Holland North department: https://www.alzheimer-nederland.nl/regios/zuid-holland-noord.
