Deme will participate in the first large-scale offshore wind project in the United States, announced Monday the Belgian group specializing in particular in solutions for the offshore energy industry. Its subsidiary Deme Offshore US LLC was indeed selected for the installation of the foundations of offshore wind turbines as part of the Vineyard Wind 1 project, located on the Atlantic, 24 kilometers south of Martha’s Vineyard, in the State of Massachusetts. The contract is “substantial“, according to the company, and is between 150 and 300 million euros.
Vineyard Wind LLC is an offshore wind development company focused on building the first large-scale project of its kind in the United States. It is 50% owned by funds from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and 50% by Avangrid Renewables.
The project provides for the construction of up to 84 turbines, which will generate 800 megawatts (MW) and provide electricity to 400,000 homes and businesses, while creating 3,600 jobs,
In addition to the installation of the wind turbines, already announced previously, Deme will now take care of the transport and installation of the monopile foundations, transition parts and scour protection of the foundations of the wind turbines, in addition to the foundation and of the offshore power substation platform, details the Belgian group.
Vineyard Wind 1 and Deme Offshore will work closely with unions and local branches to provide training in this new industry. The goal is to have American personnel play an increasingly important role in various aspects of the construction of the project.
Vineyard Wind is expected to start delivering clean energy to Massachusetts in 2023.
