Demand for slimming products drives DSM turnover in the final months of 2020 | NOW

DSM saw in the last quarter of last year that there was more demand for diet products. Interest in products for a better resistance, such as vitamin supplements, also increased last year, it reports company Tuesday with the publication of its annual figures. Materials for the aviation and automotive sectors were actually sold less.

DSM’s turnover for the full year amounted to 8.1 billion euros. That was 1 percent more than the 8 billion euros from a year earlier. The bottom line was a net profit of 711 million euros, 5 percent less than in 2019.

It was a difficult year for DSM’s Materials division. This branch depends, among other things, on the demand from aviation and car manufacturers. Both sectors were hit hard by the corona crisis. DSM did see demand from the automotive sector pick up again in the last months of the year. Despite this, sales of this business unit fell by 13 percent last year.

On the other hand, the Nutrition division did well. This benefited from an increasing demand for health products. For example, there was more demand for products for slimming or the intake of extra vitamins. Partly because of this, the turnover of this branch increased by 6 percent.

DSM is optimistic about the current year. The company expects its Materials division to show further recovery in 2021, while the food division will also continue to perform well. As a result, earnings (EBITDA) are expected to rise by “double digits” this year.
