Government Bangladesh has announced it will impose strict activity restrictions (lockdown) starting Monday (28/6) due to the surge in transmission of the corona virus (Covid-19) varian delta.
All government and private offices will be closed for the week and only medical-related transport will be allowed to operate during the restrictions imposed.
‘No one can get out of their house except in an emergency‘, said the Bangladesh government statement, Friday (25/6) night as quoted from AFP, Saturday (26/6).
The spokesman for the Bangladesh Ministry of Health, Robed Amin, said police and border guards would be fully deployed to enforce the policy lockdown, and the army may also be involved when necessary.
“This is a dangerous and worrying situation. If we don’t contain it now, we will face a situation like India,” Amin said, also referring to the spike in cases in neighboring India in April and May 2021.
For information, the Covid-19 infection rate has risen sharply since mid-May in Bangladesh, which has a population of about 170 million people.
As of last Friday, the Bangladeshi government recorded nearly 6,000 new cases of infection, and 108 deaths from Covid-19. It is the second highest death toll in Bangladesh during the global Covid-19 pandemic.
The most ‘horrific’ situation occurred in districts near the Indian border, where hospitals in the towns of Khuina and Rajshahi were reportedly overwhelmed.
Meanwhile, in India, which was the first place where the delta variant was discovered, the last few weeks began to show a sharp decline in cases of Covid-19 transmission after the enactment of lockdown until the middle of last week.
On Friday, fewer than 50,000 new cases were reported — down from the previous 400,000 spike in daily positives.
