Varian Delta virus Corona make positive numbers in Africa soar. This spike speed is said to be a record in rekor Africa.
The WHO said the number of infections had risen in Africa for the sixth week in a row. Increases week-on-week to nearly 202,000 in the last week.
“The speed and scale of Africa’s third wave is unlike anything we have seen before,” said WHO Regional Director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti.
The continent’s weekly record currently stands at 224,000 new cases. Deaths increased 15 percent in 38 African countries to nearly 3,000 in the same period.
Oxygen demand in Africa is now 50 percent higher than the peak of the first wave, a year ago.
“The rampant spread of more infectious variants is pushing the threat to Africa to a whole new level,” Moeti said.
“More transmissions mean more serious illness and more deaths, so everyone must act now and step up precautions to stop an emergency from becoming a tragedy.”
The highly contagious Delta variant has been reported in 16 countries, accounting for 97 percent of samples sequenced in Uganda and 79 percent in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
African countries suffer from vaccine shortage COVID which paralyzes. Only 15 million people or about 1.2 percent of Africa’s population are fully vaccinated.
