Delta variant keeps ugly house in the US: currently more…

In the United States, the seven-day average of daily corona infections is higher than in the summer of 2020, when vaccines were not yet available. Rochelle Walensky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said this at a press briefing at the White House on Tuesday. This is almost entirely due to the delta variant, the new cases almost exclusively concern unvaccinated people.

The seven-day average of corona infections rose to 72,790 cases last Friday, according to the CDC. At the peak of the pandemic last summer, the US averaged 68,700 cases per day over a seven-day period. Last Saturday and Sunday the average again fell below that threshold.

“While we desperately want to get out of this pandemic, Covid-19 is clearly not done with us, so our struggle will take a little longer,” Walensky said. The director of the American Public Health Institute insisted that the infections almost all occur in people who have not been vaccinated.

Driven by the highly contagious delta variant, the number of infections is also increasing in the US, especially in areas with a low vaccination coverage. However, studies have repeatedly shown that the available vaccines are very effective against Covid-19, and in particular greatly reduce the risk of serious illness, hospitalization and death. Only about 0.001 percent of people who become infected after vaccination have died. Nearly 165 million Americans are fully vaccinated. About 70 percent of adults have had at least one shot.
