Delta is extending a stop on flights between New York and Tel Aviv

The American airline Delta Air Lines announced on Thursday that it would extend until the end of the year the suspension of its service between New York and Tel Aviv, which was originally planned until the end of October .

In a statement, Delta said it made this decision due to “ongoing conflicts in the region”.

The company decided to stop these flights at the end of July, after an initial increase in tensions in Lebanon, against the backdrop of a war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

At the end of July, one of the military leaders of the pro-Iranian movement Hezbollah, Fouad Chokr, was killed in an Israeli strike near Beirut. The group responded by sending hundreds of drones and rockets into Israel.

In late August, the Israeli army struck more than 270 targets in Lebanon in an effort, they said, to prevent Hezbollah’s main offensive.

This week, a wave of explosions of interceptors belonging to members of the movement on Tuesday, followed by a second that destroyed walkie-talkies on Wednesday, caused a total of 37 deaths and nearly 3,000 injuries.

“The safety of our customers and crews remains our top priority,” the company said.

The companies Lufthansa and Air France also decided on Thursday to suspend their flights to and from Tel Aviv.

American Airlines had already announced that they would no longer operate flights to the Israeli capital until the end of March 2025 and United Airlines suspended them indefinitely.
