Delta Flight Plunges 27,000 Feet in 10 Minutes During Emergency Diversion
On September 6, Delta Flight DL2311 experienced a sudden cabin pressurization failure en route from Los Angeles International Airport to Salt Lake City International Airport, forcing the Boeing 737-900ER carrying 174 passengers and six crew members to drop roughly 27,000 feet in just 10 minutes and make an emergency diversion to Las Vegas, according to reporting by The Independent.
Emergency Descent and Cockpit Communications Over Nevada
Air traffic control recordings show the flight crew initiating emergency maneuvers as cabin pressure systems failed at altitude. “Delta 2311 currently [in] rapid descent,” the crew told controllers, according to audio transcripts cited by The Independent. “We’d like to get down to 9,000, and we’re direct [to] Las Vegas.”
When air traffic controllers asked if emergency oxygen masks had deployed in the cabin, the pilot confirmed the action. Passengers reported seeing the yellow masks drop from overhead compartments as the aircraft pitched downward. The flight landed safely at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.
Travelers exited the aircraft normally upon arrival. Delta Air Lines arranged a replacement aircraft to transport passengers onward to Salt Lake City.
“As safety comes before everything else at Delta, the flight crew of Delta flight 2311 LAX-SLC followed their training and procedures to safely bring the aircraft to optimal altitude when an unexpected pressurization issue occurred,” a Delta spokesperson told Fox News, as reported by The Independent.
Passenger Accounts of Cabin Confusion
One traveler shared an account on Reddit describing the incident as “pretty traumatic,” noting that the most frightening element “wasn’t even the descent — it was not knowing what was going on,” as reported by The Independent.
“Flight attendants were trying to make announcements with their masks on and it was almost impossible to hear them,” the passenger wrote. “The cabin was confused and pretty panicked.”
Aviation safety experts note that rapid decompression events requiring emergency descents are unusual in modern domestic commercial aviation. Matthew “Whiz” Buckley, a retired U.S. Navy F/A-18 fighter pilot with nearly 40 years of flying experience, told Fox News that such pressurization occurrences “are an extremely rare issue” in the United States, according to The Independent.
