Delta Electronics Signs 43 Million GBP Hydrogen Energy Cell Technology Transfer & Licensing Contract with Ceres Power

Delta Electronics (2308-TW) announced today (18th) that it has signed a contract with Ceres Power of the United Kingdom for 43 millionGBP (aboutNew Taiwan Dollar 1.7 billion) hydrogen energy cell stack technology transfer and licensing contract, Delta will develop a complete solid oxide hydrogen fuel cell system (SOFC, Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) and water electrolysis hydrogen production system (SOEC, Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell ), with production expected to begin at the end of 2026.

Delta CEO Zheng Ping said that hydrogen energy will play an important role in the global transition to net-zero emissions. By combining Ceres’ leading solid oxide battery stack technology with Delta’s power electronics and heat dissipation technology, the goal is to develop high energy conversion efficiency. The fuel cell and water electrolysis hydrogen production system further completes Delta’s infrastructure layout and uses technology to assist the global carbon reduction process.

Zheng Ping further pointed out that hydrogen fuel cells have the advantages of stable power supply and high efficiency, and can improve the construction of microgrids and decentralized power grids. The demand in key facilities such as data centers, semiconductor industry and precision industry will also continue to grow; water electrolysis In terms of hydrogen production, industries such as chemical industry, electric power, and steelmaking are also actively developing processes to replace fossil raw materials with green hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions.

Phil Caldwell, CEO of Ceres, said that combined with Ceres’ SOFC and SOEC technologies, Delta will be able to create efficient and clean hydrogen energy solutions for customers. Hydrogen energy is the key to a reliable and sustainable power system in the future. This technology licensing cooperation will be the first step for both parties to work together to accelerate the development of the hydrogen energy industry.

In addition to obtaining key battery stack technology licenses, Delta will also establish a net-zero science laboratory at its Tainan plant to develop cutting-edge zero-carbon technologies including hydrogen energy and enrich R&D capabilities in related application fields.

Delta said that with the assistance of Ceres Engineering Services, the Tainan plant is expected to complete product development and production line construction from 2024 to 2026, and start production at the end of 2026, integrating the hydrogen energy system with its existing microgrid, energy management, etc. Diversified solutions will enable customers to create more resilient low-carbon infrastructure.

Ceres is headquartered in the UK and has invested in hydrogen energy solid oxide battery stack technology for more than 20 years. It is one of the technology leaders in this field. It will be listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2023. Its business model focuses on technology development and patent licensing.
