Two years ago, Dell came out with an XPS Plus laptop with a special keyboard. It had no gaps between the buttons, and the top row of keys was replaced by a touch pad. Similarly, Apple experimented, for example, with the MacBook or Lenovo with the Yoga Book model.
While these brands have discovered that their customers don’t seem to like it, Dell has now bet on this design for virtually the entire XPS line, introducing three new models in three sizes. Accordingly, the original XPS 13 Plus was upgraded and renamed XPS 13, and in the same spirit, it added two sizes in 14 and 16″. Another special feature is the invisible touchpad, which completely blends in with the surrounding surface. However, there are good reviews for it among users.

Dell says in a press release that they are focusing on top productivity with these products. In the light of the “shock” from the keyboard, it should not fall in that the notebook is full of quality materials. The body is made by machining aluminum, which should ensure high strength. The display is covered by protective glass Gorilla Glass 3 (but the 2020 generation boasted the Gorilla Glass 6 version) and inside are Intel Core Ultra processors (including the NPU chip). Honza Olšan wrote more about NPU in the article presenting the Meteor Lake generation. The new laptops also have a new key to launch the Copilot function in Windows.
Depending on the configuration, you can have a variant with IPS or OLED, from 14″ then also with dedicated RTX 4050 or RTX 4070 graphics. The basic XPS 13 also only has two USB-C ports, one of which will always be for power (just like the older XPS 13 Plus). Both of the larger diagonals have speaker grills around the keyboard, forget about the number pad (even if it’s just a touch pad). They also have one more USB-C and include a headphone jack.
XPS stands for eXtreme Performance System, and the Dell brand dates back to 1993, originally for desktops. Notebooks with the XPS designation appeared in 2007 (the first was apparently the XPS M1730). In addition to the XPS, Dell offers Inspiron, Latitude, Vostro and gaming Alienware laptops.
For fun, below is another major keyboard change, this time on the Latitude 15, which also received a design hit a few years ago.
