Dell XPS 17 Review: Big Screen Laptop Again! | Gizmodo Japan

Small but justice is over.

It doesn’t end with the simple story that the world should be small, and conversely, it should be large. In particular, gadgets have different tastes for each user depending on their lifestyle and usage. However, it is still in fashion and obsolete. For example, in an era when smartphones are getting bigger and bigger, there is a time when smaller ones will be noticed again. So now, I’m worried about the signs that the big screen waves are likely to come again on my laptop. So, the US Gizmodo editorial departmentDell XPS 17I reviewed. Anyway, it’s good for consumers to have more choices!

A few years ago, many laptop makers quietly removed the 17-inch model from their lineup (except for some gaming handsets). Apple’s MacBook Pro 17-inch, Dell’s XPS 17 only. But over time, the bezel has been made thinner to improve power efficiency. The evolved 17-inch is now back.. It’s thin and light, but the screen is big, I like it!

Last year, Apple released a larger 16-inch MacBook Pro. As if to follow, Dell has revived the 17-inch this year. 2020 was a peculiar year, but honestly, I think it’s the best time to revive a laptop with a large screen.

What is this? :Dell’s flagship terminal 17 inches.

price:From $ 1,350 (about 139,000 yen) (review terminal is $ 2,750 = about 283,000 yen).

Good point:Beautiful design, small webcam, lots of USB-C ports, SD card reader, keyboard mess, bright display, dongle included.

Unfortunately:I also wanted a nice GPU option. The image quality of the webcam is ok. Depending on the option, it can be quite expensive.

There are advantages unique to 17 inches

XPS 17 comeback, albeitThe design is almost the same as the basic XPS.. The body is designed with narrow edges, the upper lid is silver aluminum, and the carbon fiber dock is in the middle. It weighs about 2.5 kg, measures about 37.5 x about 24.8 x about 1.95 cm, and has a glossy feel and is portable. It should be 17 inches big, but you won’t notice its big size until you stack it with the XPS 15. What’s the wonder of the XPS 17? Phantom? mirage? Amazing big screen when opened, amazing slimness when closed.. Considering that the XPS 17 weighed about 3.6 kg in 2012, the last time I saw it, its evolution is amazing.

In terms of exterior design, I like the fact that there are many ports.4 USB-C ports(Thunderbolt 3 compatible) has a headphone jack,With SD card reader.. If you wish you had HDMI and USB-A, don’t worry. How,Corresponding with the attached dongleI can do it.

If you open it, it will be a display. This display has a variety of options, from 1,900 x 1,200 non-touch panels to 4K UHD +. A light bezel on a large display. An ultra-compact webcam and IR camera module that sits on top of its display. The IR camera supports Windows Hello face recognition login. The webcam is 720p HD, but honestly I hope the image quality is a little better.

At the bottom is a keyboard and large stereo speakers.Delivers a rich sound throughout the room2.5W woofer and 1.5W tweeter are on each side.. The keyboard has the impression that it is a classic keyboard, or a classic keyboard with elasticity and sharpness. It’s not perfect, but it’s a straight keyboard, and it feels as stable as I expected. Below that is a touchpad with a large presence of about 15 x about 9 cm. There is more than enough space for cursor operation, and gesture control is perfect. Even if it’s this big, you can rest assured that you can put your wrists on both sides.

The only thing I’m curious about is that you can see it on a 17-inch gaming PC.Not equipped with a numeric keypadDell’s decision. It may be a part, but some people should be crying for this decision. However, looking at the overall balance, it was a good decision to install a large speaker without a numeric keypad.

The model reviewed this time is an upgraded version of the 4K 3,840 x 2,400 touch screen. The brightness is over 450 nits, and I think that the color brightness richness is the highest class in a notebook PC using an LCD panel. If you’re thinking of buying an XPS 17 for photo and video editing, we highly recommend upgrading from the entry model FHD + to a 4K screen. The aspect ratio is 16:10. If you have a large notebook, it would be nice to have a large space in the vertical direction.

High performance that makes creators happy

There is no problem with performance as well as a large screen. The basis is the 10th generation Intel Core i5-10300H CPU, but the upgraded version reviewed isCore i7-10875H CPU.. It’s really fast. The result of the CPU rendering test in Blender is 4 minutes and 40 seconds. It has the same CPUMSI Creator 15Good result, which was shortened from 8 minutes 33 seconds to about 4 minutes. Similarly, the graphics performance is 6 minutes 26 seconds for XPS 17 in the Blender GPU test, which is 2 minutes from 8 minutes 36 seconds for MSI Creator 15. GPU is the same RTX 2060. This is a very nice and important factor for creators.

Also, I don’t think I had a game PC in mind as a rival, but as a result, “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” came out at 1,080p setting and 80fps or more, so I can do it.

Battery life is enough for a terminal of this size. The result of the continuous video playback test is 8 hours 58 minutes. Two hours longer than the MSI Creatro 15 and one hour longer than the HP ZBook Create G7.

The only complaint is …

After using it for several weeks in the review,Only one complaint about the XPS 17.. that is,priceis. The basic entry model is a 17-inch FHD + screen, Core i5 CPU, memory 8GB, capacity 256GB, integrated graphics for $ 1,350 (about 139,000 yen), but a littleThe price goes up instantly when you upgrade.. In fact, the models used in the review have been upgraded, with a 4K touch screen, Core i7 10875H CPU, 32GB of memory, 1TB of SSD capacity, RTX 2060 GPU, and $ 2,750.The price is almost doubleIt has become. Even if you try to save memory and capacity, it costs $ 2,450 when you choose the RTX 2060. If you can drop the GPU, the GTX 1650 Ti model for $ 1,800 may be a good balance.

Timing of 2020

Well, XPS 17The key is to release in 2020I think. In 2020, when everyday life is overturned, people all over the world want to quickly regain their normal lives, but what is “normal”? I think. Many people are now working and learning remotely from their homes, but will they be able to completely return to their pre-corona state if offices and schools are reopened?

The 15-inch notebook has long been a popular size with the best balance of price, power and portability. But what if the number of occasions when you carry your laptop is reduced?17-inch notebook, don’t you find it more attractive than ever? Not only is the big screen more productive, but the XPS 17 offers a wide range of ports and options. Even if it’s big, it’s just a notebook, so it’s not the end of sitting on the desk like a desktop.

The XPS 17 isn’t that stupid in price and size compared to the XPS 15 (although it’s big, so be careful about the size of your bag when you carry it around).Dell may not have a better year than 2020 to bring the XPS 17 back.. The best notebook PC product line on the market now has more powerful and larger model choices. It’s also a comeback that is much lighter than the previous model a long time ago (although it was a while ago). I’m sure some people don’t get it right now on their 17-inch laptops. Still, the XPS 17 is a good device to explain why it’s a big notebook again.

Summary

-In addition to full USB-C support, it also supports HDMI and USB-A with a dongle.

-Although it is not aimed at game PCs, I can not help thinking that there is RTX 2070 (or equivalent level) as a graphic option.

-The entry model starts at $ 1,350 (about 139,000 yen), so it’s easy to reach, but the price will increase as soon as you upgrade the graphic performance, display, and other parts.

-The 720p webcam is small and doesn’t take up much space, but the image quality is ok.
