Dell Latitude 7230 Rugged Extreme Tablet Review: Features, Pros, & Cons

Pros

  • Excellent bright display
  • Decent configurability
  • Usable cameras
  • Increased resistance

Minuses

  • Modularity only during the initial configuration
  • Higher price

Just a few weeks ago we featured the Panasonic Toughbook here and now we have another piece of the rugged category. Dell Latitude 7230 Rugged Extreme Tablet but it’s not a laptop, the concept is more like a tablet, although you can firmly attach a keyboard thicker than many office laptops.

Although this Dell shares with the Panasonic increased durability, it is clear from the design that it is aimed at quite different deployment methods. Panasonic is more likely to expand with subsequent devices thanks to its advanced modularity. Thanks to its better display and integrated high-quality cameras, the Dell scores with mobile teams, such as firefighters and police officers.

Equipment for a hard life

The two-and-a-half-centimeter-thick tablet doesn’t really call for gentle handling. All corners are covered by softened plastic to absorb shocks, the rubberized body does not give an opportunity for scratches, and the display covers a raised edge to withstand even a direct fall. In the corners of the tablet, there are loops for attaching clamps, handles or straps, and on the bottom there is a flat connector with locking slots for robust attachment of an additional keyboard.

For an additional fee, you can extend the robust tablet with an equally durable keyboard

With it, the tablet turns into a robust, durable laptop, and you can better protect the display by folding the keyboard. At the same time, you will also find three classic USB connectors and a connector for connecting a wired network on the keyboard. Power, in this case via USB-C, can only be connected to the body of the tablet.

The 1.5 cm thick keyboard offers quality keys, a touchpad and other connectors

In addition to two USB-C with Thunderbolt support, there are two other USBs on the body of the tablet, a microSD reader and a headphone jack. Compared to a notebook, there are no monitor outputs (you have to use USB-C) or an older serial port. Dell can replace one USB with HDMI and add another port, but as a target user you can’t change it as needed.
