A story bordering on the dystopian tale comes from Ukraine.
In the small town of Novyj Buh (around 15,000 souls) located in the southern region of Mykolaiv, a woman was forced to pick up her husband’s amputated legs and take them away with her after the man’s surgery.
The woman did so, and then fainted later while she was carrying her husband’s amputated limbs in a sack: the sensation of her legs still warm in contact with her back made the woman feel sick.
The affair caused a wave of indignation in the former Soviet country, with the shortage of public hospital funds being targeted by the population.
According to reports, the hospital doctors allegedly ordered his wife to take away her husband’s amputated limbs, claiming they did not have the facilities to dispose of “medical waste”.
The testimony of a friend of the woman is dramatic: “Her husband’s legs were amputated. She was told in the hospital to come in the morning, stay there until the surgery is finished and then take the legs. He put this sack with his legs over his shoulders. She left the hospital and passed out because she felt the heat in these back legs ”.
According to the director of the hospital where the crime took place, the amputated limbs would have been delivered to the woman as usual, with a view to a possible future burial of the relative (with the legs buried together with the body).
Explaining the reason for the absence of a “recycling center”, the director then explained how it was destroyed by the locals who then “looted” it in order to resell some parts.
