Delirium Facts, Latest Symptoms of COVID-19

Jakarta

Delirium touted as a new symptom of COVID-19 that attacks the mentality of the sufferer. This condition is experienced by a number of positive patients with the Corona virus, especially the elderly.

Delirium is a mental symptom that causes the sufferer to experience severe confusion with reduced awareness. Doctors warn that this condition can trigger brain disorders and even interfere with the sufferer’s mental condition.

“Delirium is a state of confusion in which a person feels disconnected from reality, as if he is dreaming,” said University of Catalonia (UOC) researcher Javier Correa.

In a study conducted by researchers from UOC, it is known delirium usually occurs in conjunction with other symptoms of COVID-19, such as loss of taste and smell, headaches, coughing, and shortness of breath.

The study, which has been published in the Journal of Clinical Immunology and Immunotherapy, also highlights the connection between the Corona COVID-19 virus and the brain as the central nervous system. The researchers found there are indications that COVID-19 also affects the central nervous system and results in neurocognitive changes, such as headaches and delirium.

“The cause may be between three things. The lack of oxygen supply to the brain, inflammation of brain tissue due to cytokine storms, and the fact that the virus has the ability to flow in the blood to the brain,” said Correa

Characteristics of a person with delirium:

  • Difficult to focus and easily distracted
  • Daydreaming and slow to react
  • Decreased memory
  • Trouble speaking
  • Hallucinating
  • Easily offended and mood swings abruptly
  • Often restless
  • Sleeping habits change.
