In the 90s the Spanish social elevator seemed better oiled than ever. And as every democracy needs its parables, the new idols of the people were now ordinary people who came from the working class. Delusions of Spain. The frivolities that changed a country tells four stories that obsessed the nation thanks, of course, to television’s ability to build the social fabric. Four people who for a few months were the most famous in Spain for different reasons will be analyzed in depth in Delirios de España, an original production and format of Podium Podcast that premieres this Thursday, October 26 and is available for free in all audio platforms.
The 12-episode series is written and presented by Juan Sanguino, collaborator of ICON and El País Cultura. The journalist is also the author of several essays on pop culture in the 90s and the first decade of the 2000s. In this series he wanted to review some of the life stories that most impacted him during his childhood and adolescence. “Every time a TV video from the 90s resurfaces on social media, I realize that young people talk about that country as if it were another planet. Even many who experienced it firsthand today seem incapable of understanding that Spain.”
The journalist thought that the podcast format would work to tell these stories by allowing an immediate narration and contextualizing situations that may seem bizarre today. “Some were already grotesque when they occurred, but over time the illusion is generated that if something happened it was because it seemed good to everyone. He wanted to try to explain these bizarre episodes and, with the benefit of time perspective, analyze what they mean and what they say about us then and today. That they stop being a diffuse memory, an anecdote or a meme and that they serve to understand why Spain is the way it is. And if I don’t get it, at least we have a good time,” explains Sanguino.
Two episodes and a ‘B side’
The podcast is made up of two documentary episodes for each of the stories of these protagonists “and a side B” – or third conversational episode – where Sanguino talks with journalists who were as affected by that moment as it was by him. The first of the stories is that of the tribute concert at the Las Ventas Bullring to Miguel Ángel Blanco (PP councilor murdered by ETA in 1997).

The country’s main artists sang their best-known songs before thousands of people, but political intentions were derailed when the night turned into a festive festival that contrasted with the harsh reality for which that young man from Ermua had become famous. The two narrative episodes are now available on Podium Podcast and all audio platforms and the conversational episode that will accompany this story will be published next Thursday, November 2. In this case, it will be the journalist Manuel Jabois who will accompany Sanguino to reflect on the ravages of that performance in which the Macarena was danced, there were boos against some of the artists for speaking in their language and the artist Nacho Cano transcended as a meme to the XXI century.
With production by Laura Escarza, recordings by Nico Solís and sound design by Dani Gutiérrez, the podcast is directed by Eugenio Viñas and is executive produced by Lourdes Moreno Cazalla and edited by Ana Ribera. Every Thursday you can listen to a new episode until the triad that makes up each story is completed with the two double narrative episodes and the spoken coda.
