The non-performing loans granted by Spanish banks fell again in May, although only one hundredth with respect to April (4.19%), until 4.18%, its lowest level since January 2009. For its part, credit granted by the sector stagnated compared to the rise in April.
According to provisional data from the Bank of Spain, delinquency of loans granted by the total of credit entities to companies and individuals maintains the containment tone of recent months, to stand at 4.18% in the month of May, compared to 4.19% in April and 4.55% registered a year earlier. In this way, the doubtful loans ratio continued its downward trend and remained at its lowest since January 2009, when the rate stood at 3.89%.
This doubtful loans ratio -according to the data broken down by type of entity- reflects that the set of deposit entities -the one corresponding to banks, savings banks and cooperatives- closed May at 4.08%, compared to 4.09% in March and 4.48% a year earlier, likewise its minimum level since January 2009. As regards financial credit establishments, their default ratio stood at 7.14% in the fifth month of the year, above the 7.12% of the month before and the 6 .83% from May 2021.
As for the credit granted by the sector, this was reduced by 172 million euros in May compared to April, to stand at 1,221 billion euros (-0.01%), while the total volume of doubtful loans decreased by 166 million euros, to 51,035 million (-0.3%). Compared to May 2021, total credit increased by 0.7% and doubtful balance fell by 7.5%.
Provisions rise slightly in the month and fall 14% in the year
The provisions of credit institutions stood at 35,386 million euros in May, which represents an increase of 0.2% in the month and a fall of 13.9% in the year. Provisions for deposit institutions stood at 32,942 million euros in May, 0.17% more than in April and 14.4% less than a year earlier.
The Bank of Spain includes in these figures the methodological change in the classification of Financial Credit Establishments (EFC), which since January 2014 ceased to be considered within the category of credit institutions. Excluding the change, delinquency would stand at 4.29%, since the credit balance was 1,190 billion euros in May, by excluding the EFC credit.
