Delhaize announced at the beginning of March that it wants to transfer all of its 128 stores under its own management to independent operators. The unions opposed this and for weeks there were strikes in several shops.

Delhaize is only a limited part of the international group, but an impact of the strikes on the quarterly figures is possible. An analyst from Petercam estimates that approximately 100 million euros in turnover was lost. Observers also note that price competition may have weighed on margins.

Delhaize does not want to give any figures about the impact of the strikes. “That doesn’t make sense. The impact is huge,” says a spokesman.
