Delhaize invests heavily in unmanned supermarkets: are stores without cashiers the future?

About a year ago, Delhaize opened its first Shop&Go store in Belgium. These are small supermarkets without cashiers. As a consumer, you have to pay for your groceries yourself. “You can find the shops in office buildings, schools and hospitals,” says Els Breugelmans, professor of marketing at KU Leuven, in “The world today” on Radio 1. Delhaize mainly wants to replace company restaurants with this concept. “They are getting more and more difficult because employees have been working from home more often since the corona crisis.”

After a year, 50 Shop&Go stores have already been opened in various companies in our country. Delhaize also wants to continue investing heavily in the concept this year. By the end of the year, the supermarket chain wants to double the number of Shop&Go stores to a total of 100 stores.
