Delgres: “Music is like medicine”

More than any history book, music makes it possible to trace unprecedented correspondences between eras and universes. Three years ago, Delgres, a trio born from the imagination of Pascal Danaë, introduced his unique style, at the crossroads between blues and Caribbean culture.
Their first album, Mo Jodi, is quickly adopted by the public who like to find their new heroes on stage, during memorable concerts.
While waiting for the return of the performing arts, Pascal Danaë defends 4:00, a second album less raw, and more melancholy.

Alice Cooper: “I’m the bad guy of rock’n’roll”

Your first record came out three years ago, it was another world. Is your new album inspired by the new deal?

We had the chance to record the album before everything changed. It was still in the world before. Since then we have felt all of these crazy things. We remain in our themes of hope, freedom, freedom from alienation. In light of what is happening today, these songs take on a very different connotation. We did everything we wanted, and the news got involved.

The incredible saga of Fleetwood Mac in ten songs

Between the two albums, there was a lot of talk of Islamo-leftism or racialization. This does not necessarily reassure the state of our society.

I am naturally optimistic. It is moving in the right direction, but very slowly. These are the last upheavals of a society that has been built on these models for millennia. Things that seemed to be taken for granted are called into question. People sometimes withdraw, and that gives rise to a whole lot of controversy. Maybe in twenty years we will have passed all that.

You stay true to the sound signature you created with the first album. The production is less gross.

Yes, we wanted a different experience. On the first album, we were all in the same room, recreating the atmosphere of the live. There, we wanted to use the recording studio as an ally. Our palette is a little larger, the sound is smoother, but we preserve our sound identity.

Michel Portal: “Music drives me crazy! “

Your songs are very rhythmic and positive, but the lyrics are often very dark. Do you accept this contrast?

It is the Caribbean soul, but we could extend it to all popular music. When Friday night comes and you’ve had a bad week, you let go of it all thanks to the music. But the lyrics concern you, and speak of everyday life. Music is like medicine. It’s the same with the blues. He talks about complicated, hard things while making people dance.

When Serge Gainsbourg makes his cinema

Speaking, you go from the universal to the particular, talking about your family’s journey.

The 1st album represented a quest for identity as a West Indian, in particular through the figure of the anti-slaveryist Louis Delgrès. The second part of this Caribbean odyssey takes place in a more contemporary era. Throughout my journey, I have grasped a whole bunch of little information that has allowed me to build myself and to make this journey. I’m talking, in 4:00, of the West Indians who are forced to leave their island to find work. It touches me more closely, because my parents arrived in the early 1960s. I wanted to pay tribute to them. They did not experience slavery, but a form of alienation linked to migration and hard work.
