A delegation of journalists from Nicaragua recently visited China and participated in a series of exchange activities in Beijing, Wuhan and other places.

Among them are news anchors, television program producers and new media directors. For most it was their first trip to China.

When talking about their first experience with the Asian country, the Nicaraguan journalists explained that China is developed, friendly and colorful, and that they will show the Nicaraguan people the China they have seen with their own eyes.

“I take China in my heart (…) surprised by so much beauty, so much culture, so much human warmth,” said César Pérez, photographer for the Communication and Citizenship Council of Nicaragua, at the end of the 14-day trip through China.

TECHNOLOGY IS THE DOOR TO THE FUTURE

At the Bulevar Gaoxin station in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, the hanging train slowly arrived at the platform, and all the Nicaraguan journalists took out their cell phones to capture this science-fiction-like moment.

Félix Fernández was amazed by this technology. As director of the JP+ digital information platform, he said that high technology is one of the areas of greatest interest for young Nicaraguans.

At Donghu Technology Development Zone in Wuhan and Huahu Airport in Ezhou, artificial intelligence technology has been deeply integrated into all aspects of production. This caught the attention of Hamilton Galeano, a journalist for Nicaragua’s Channel 4.

Galeano published a series of vlogs on the Channel’s social networks and on his personal accounts. “Huahu Airport: A strategic logistics hub in Wuhan, China,” was the title of one of the vlogs, which received many likes from Nicaraguan Internet users.

What encourages Fernández the most is the “leadership” of Chinese youth in technology companies. He commented that “it is the young people who are creating, it is the young people who are at the forefront of the creation of new technologies,” adding that “the young people of Nicaragua are always open to learning.”

Technology, artificial intelligence, are the doors to the future of the entire globalized society and China is being a pioneer in this branch of technology,” Fernández emphasized.

THE SPIRITUAL IS REFLECTED IN CULTURE

For some members of the delegation, China, an ancient and distant country, is a bit of a mystery.

But in the eyes of Pablo Fariñas, audiovisual producer of Viva Nicaragua-Canal 13, the ancient Chinese culture helps to understand the country because “a people without culture does not have faith in the spiritual and it is reflected in the culture.”

“We are seeing Chinese culture, that through it the strengthening of the people is becoming unified, and that helps development,” he explained.

Fariñas showed many group photos on his WeChat Moments, including ones he took with a museum guide and a restaurant waitress, both dressed in Hanfu style, China’s traditional clothing.

He really likes the ancient dances of China, so one of the things he wants to propose is the exchange of music and dances between Nicaragua and China.

“In culture we can give ourselves a lot, we can offer ourselves a lot,” he noted.

YOU CAN’T COVER THE SUN WITH A FINGER

One night, Celia Zamora went out and walked almost eight kilometers through the streets of Wuhan, to see the city first-hand.

The press director of TN8 in Nicaragua is used to obtaining first-hand information. On her walk, she was impressed by the orderly street scenes and the friendliness of the people in Wuhan.

Zamora stated that large media corporations, aligned with the United States discourse, present China as “a closed society, a cold society, an unfriendly society.”

However, “the truth is no. They are people just like us, with a big heart, focused on the well-being of their family and getting ahead (…) China has definitely focused a lot on the well-being of its people,” he said.

“It is a big contrast that I find with the information I had prior to what I was able to verify in person, first hand,” explained the journalist.

Perez feels the same. After returning to Nicaragua, he is planning to organize several galleries so that the Nicaraguan people can understand a comprehensive and three-dimensional China through the photographs he took.

Zamora mentioned a saying in Nicaragua that “you can’t cover the sun with a finger,” stating that he believes that is the case with China.

“You cannot continue to hide that this is a cultured town, a developed town, a respectful town, a friendly town, a warm town, a hard-working town, and that it has a Government that responds to the interests of those popular needs,” he added.
