Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s faithful ally | Spain

Delcy Rodriguez, 50, is Vice President of the Government from Maduro since June 2018. Only a few days after taking office, it was sanctioned by the European Union and the United States Department of the Treasury, along with other members of the Venezuelan Government, for their repressive policies.

Without having a diplomatic career, she has served as Foreign Minister since December 2014, when she was appointed by the President “Chancellor” or Minister of the Popular Power for Foreign Affairs. She was the first woman to hold this position in Venezuela. Its popularity among supporters of the Bolivarian regime has led Maduro to decorate it with the Military Order of National Defense (2016).

Rodríguez, a lawyer from the Central University of Venezuela and with studies of Social Law in Paris, she is the daughter of Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, founder of the Marxist Socialist League party, who died when he was in prison and she was only seven years old.

His brother, the psychiatrist Jorge Rodríguez, is also an important member of the Government of Nicolás Maduro, currently as Minister for Communication and Information. The work of Delcy Rodríguez has been key for the Venezuelan Government as the international encirclement has been more severe. The younger sister of Jorge Rodríguez, has occupied in this period of being on top of the increasingly reduced, but still powerful, international support for the so-called Bolivarian revolution: Russia, China or Turkey, which keep the Venezuelan Government afloat after the US economic sanctions and the oil embargo. Without going any further, last Monday, his private plane made a technical stopover in Madrid on the way to Istanbul.

Before auparla as his number two, Maduro also had Delcy Rodríguez at the head of the Ministry of Communication and the parallel National Constituent Assembly. And she was appointed president of the Truth Commission, when a dialogue process began in the Dominican Republic with the mediation of the former Spanish president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero that ended in failure. The Rodríguez brothers maintain a good relationship with Zapatero.

Rodriguez met Minister Felix Plasencia, with whom he was traveling on the plane that stopped in Madrid early Monday, in London, where she took a social policy course at Birkbeck University.

Plasencia is also a friend of the Spanish Transport Minister, José Luis Ábalos, according to the latter. Plasencia is supposedly the reason why Ábalos went to Barajas early on Monday and met Delcy Rodríguez in a “casual” way, according to his version.
