The Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Emirates) finished in seventh place overall in the Tour of the Basque Country.
In his first season in the World Tour, the tricolor rider, one of the great promises of international cycling, completed the sixth and final stage with a time of one hour and 41 minutes, to cross the finish line in tenth place. For his part, his partner Juan Ayuso, despite coming second, was crowned in the competition.
Del Toro, winner of the Under 23 Tour de France last year, finished two minutes behind Ayuso, who clocked a total time of 15:56:50.
In the queen stage, Ayuso attacked the yellow jersey Mattias Skjelmose, who finally fell behind on a 138-kilometer route around Eibar, with seven climbs.
The Spanish jewel won a race marked by the abandonment of the three top favorites; Primoz Roglic, Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard, who abandoned on Thursday after a violent collective fall.
The serious injuries of these last two could give a big turn to the 2024 season, especially if Vingegaard, two-time Tour de France champion, does not make it to the next edition of the French round.
The Spaniard succeeds Vingegaard in the Itzulia list, while his compatriot Carlos Rodríguez (Ineos) was in second place on the podium and Skjelmose was third.
Del Toro, who recently made the jump to the elite, continues to gain experience in a team that is considered the best in the world. Greater challenges await him, so these types of races will serve as a warm-up for big events such as the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia or the Vuelta de España, where the Mexican is expected to participate.
