A WWII bomb was discovered near the Frankfurt exhibition center. Deactivation is in progress.
On Monday, a World War II bomb was found during construction work near the Katharinenkreisel in Bockenheim. The site is located near the Frankfurt exhibition center. Defusing the 500-kilogram disaster has been underway since Wednesday morning. 20,000 people have to leave the danger zone.
As announced by the police on their Twitter account, everything is going according to plan so far. An evacuation area with a radius of 1,000 meters has been defined. Residents were asked to leave the area by 9am. (Here you can check if you are interested in mitigation https://fwffm.info/karte.).
It may be necessary to detonate a bomb in Frankfurt in a controlled manner
Due to the design, the explosive ordnance clearing service expects the measure to take longer, according to a city statement. Only Wednesday’s preparatory work could provide information on how to defuse the disaster. Controlled demolition may also be required. If this fails, according to the city, it could mean “massive damage to buildings and a great danger to human life”.
In the event of an explosion, damage to surrounding buildings can be minimized, the bomb must be covered with sand. According to the city, large quantities of water and sand have already been brought to the site.
