Defensive star wants to go to the Bundesliga: Gladbach keen on EL winner?

Does Gladbach boss Roland Virkus, seen here on July 31, 2024, have a new candidate for the defense on the hook?

Can Borussia Mönchengladbach land a prominent name for the defense?

With the completion of the training camp, Borussia Mönchengladbach has overcome the next hurdle in preparation for the new season. On Friday evening (2 August 2024), the Foals travelled back home.

Gladbach: Do the Foals have this defensive specialist on their radar?

Now the team led by head coach Gerardo Seoane (45) will begin the hot phase of preparation, two weeks before the competitive match in the first round of the DFB Cup against Erzgebirge Aue, on the training ground at Borussia Park – but without a new defensive man.

Despite the confirmed transfer plans of the Gladbach bosses around sports director Roland Virkus (56), there is still no new man available at the beginning of August for the Fohlen defense, which was shaky last season. The most recent possible candidates were the Brazilian Bernardo (29) from Bundesliga competitor VfL Bochum and David Affengruber (23) from Austrian champions Sturm Graz.

But now a possible new candidate has appeared in the rumor mill – and his name is probably well known to attentive Bundesliga followers of the last few years. As “Sky” reported this week, Sead Kolasinac (31) is said to be aiming for a return to the German top flight.

The long-time FC Schalke 04 professional has played for several well-known clubs in his CV, including Arsenal – where he was a teammate of former Fohlen Granit Xhaka (31) – and Olympique Marseille. He is currently under contract with the reigning Europa League winners Atalanta Bergamo.

There, ‘Kola’ – as he was called at Schalke – was one of the key players in the past season and, as a trained left-back, was mostly used as a central defender in the three-man defense. It is no coincidence that the Lombards would like to extend the contract with the Karlsruhe native, which expires in the summer of 2025.

But the Bosnian is said to prefer a return to the Bundesliga. According to Sky information, several clubs are said to have already put out feelers for the 31-year-old – is Borussia Mönchengladbach one of them?

Concrete names among the interested parties have not yet been mentioned, but on the football portal “transfermarkt.de“ Kolasinac is already being hotly debated – also because an insider specifically links him with the foals.

It is clear that Borussia is still looking for reinforcements for the defense. And the versatile and Bundesliga-experienced Kolasinac would fit the profile well. But the same applies to the ex-Schalke player: As long as the Foals do not generate any income, this transfer is unlikely to be realized any time soon. The search for a new defender remains a game of patience.
