Defense will only judge after Norwegian investigation into fight with Belgian soldiers

Belgian army

Defense will only comment on the fate of the four soldiers involved in the brawl in the Norwegian town of Åndalsnes when the investigation by the Norwegian authorities has been completed. This is what Minister of Defense Ludivine Dedonder (PS) says.

First the Norwegians must come up with their conclusions about the brawl in the Norwegian city of Åndalsnes in which four Belgian soldiers were involved, only then will the Belgian army judge the fate of the soldiers involved. This is what Minister of Defense Ludivine Dedonder says. “There is an investigation,” the minister confirms. “These persons are at the disposal of the local police. The Belgian army, more specifically the Belgian military police, is participating in that investigation together with the Norwegian authorities.”

The minister did not provide any additional elements for the time being. “We are currently awaiting the continuation of the investigation,” Dedonder said. “We will judge what place they still have in Defense once the investigation is completed.”

In isolation

Four Belgian soldiers, men between 20 and 40 years old, were arrested on Saturday evening for assault and battery after a fight in a café in Åndalsnes in the Norwegian region of Møre og Romsdal. A Norwegian man was hospitalized.

The four members of the 2nd Commando Battalion have been released, but are being kept in isolation within the Belgian detachment. The four were in Norway for training.
