Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s Hospitalization Raises Concerns About US Military Chain of Command

US President Joe Biden is not considering firing Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, a White House source told Reuters.

Lloyd Austin kept his hospitalization a secret for several days, contrary to procedure. According to media reports, Austin, who is second only to Biden in the chain of command of the US military and must be available at all times in case of an unforeseen crisis, even notified the president days late about his health. Hospitalized on New Year’s Day, Austin notified his deputy, Kathleen Hicks, who was on leave in Puerto Rico, on Jan. 2, and she took over some of his duties.

Asked if the defense minister was unconscious after being hospitalized as a result of the medical procedures, the official quoted by Reuters said he did not know.

The reason for the defense minister’s hospitalization was not made public, only that it was due to “complications from a non-emergency medical procedure”.
