“Russia’s military activity, especially the exceptional military build-up along Ukraine’s borders, is an alarming development that could have a destabilizing effect on the overall security environment,” the document says.
The statement said that in 2019, the Northern Defense Cooperation Organization (NORDEFCO) set up a crisis consultation mechanism on any urgent issue of common interest. The situation created by Russia near the border with Ukraine was considered so dangerous that it required such a consultation at the ministerial level.
“The Nordic countries continue to firmly support the territorial integrity, sovereignty and right of Ukraine to independently determine its foreign and security policy without outside interference,” the defense ministers of the five countries say.
They also insist that the Minsk agreements and political dialogue should remain the basis for resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
As a separate point, it is stated that the Nordic countries reject the concept of “spheres of influence”, which the Kremlin constantly uses in its political rhetoric.
